The first sky observations were made in Krakow from the roof of Collegium Maius. Among the researchers is a student of the Krakow Academy – Mikołaj Kopernik. Research tools from those years are kept in the museum of the Jagiellonian University. We should also menion the observatory arranged by ks. Stanisław Pudłowski from the Church of St. Nicholas in 1653 on Wesoła street at today’s Copernicus street. In 1788 – 1792, on the same street where Jagiellonian University is, the Czartoryski palace was rebuilt into an observatory, the patron of this construction was King Stanisław August Poniatowski himself, who equipped the place with his own goods, and the telescopes he purchased can be viewed to this day.
