In former Krakow, each journeyman, receiving the title of a master, accepted the city law and was entered into the books of Krakow’s burghers. On this occasion, placing three fingers on the image of Christ Crucified, he made an oath that read:
“I … swear to the Lord Almighty God, the only Holy Trinity, that the Polish faithful King of His Love, and to Their Honors the Lords of Krakow, who are now in this office and who will then be obedient, with the city’s laws, privileges and establishments I will always insist on the city of Krakow, yes, as I am a faithful and obedient bourgeois, I will not reveal the secrets of the Republic of this city to any man. but I will do everything that is necessary for the multiplication and benefit of the city. And if anyone speaks of any unjust and against honor about Their Majesties, the Lords of Krakow, I will oppose such one, as far as I can, and I will report them to them, nor have any companies or trade with them. I will not be who, as I am, was not a sworn burgher of Krakow, because of which the duty of His Majesty the King would die it also had the city to Krakow.
