Karol Józef Teofil Estreicher

Librarian, bibliographer, critic, historian of literature, theater, and journalism. Born and died in Krakow in 1872, died in 1908. After graduating in law and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University, he worked as a trainee at the Krakow court, then at the Lviv court. Assistant professor of bibliography at the Main School in Warsaw, then director of the Jagiellonian Library. Thanks to him, the library was enriched with many collections, old prints, manuscripts and magazines. He started working on “Polish Bibliography”, which became the greatest work of the Estreichers, very significant for Polish culture. Later, it was continued by her son Stanisław and grandson Karol jr.

He participated in the Springtide of Nations, member of the Krakow Scientific Society, co-founder of the Academy of Learning, associate of “Czas”, “Dziennik Literacki” and “Ruch Muzyczny”. A lover, guardian and writer of theater plays.
