Have you ever wondered how big the Krakow is and, primarily, how its area has been changing over the years? Below you can find some answers.
First noted in documents, area of the City of Kings was 0,8 square kilometre. Not much, right?
Prime expansion of boundaries taken place until the XIV century. King Kazimierz Wielki included Okół (colony between Krakow and Wawel Hill) in Krakow’s borders.
Another, but first significant expansion was in 1792, when, by Four-year Parliament’s decision, Krakow enlarged about suburban colonies and courts. After some minor changes during Austrian occupation, Krakow’s area amounted to 5,77 square kilometres. Much more significant, right?
In 1909, by Parliaments resolution, several suburban municipalities had joined to Krakow. Next steps were: attaching Plaszow in 1911 and Podgorze in 1915, what increased area of City of Kings to 47 square metres, but its not Krakow’s last word.
After some changes, in 1948 Kraków cover 165, 04 square kilometres, while now its 326, 8. Impressive, isn’t it?
