Konicz Tadeusz, or Kuntze, is a Polish painter born in Zielona Góra in 1733. When he was young, he worked as an assistant in the kitchen at the court of the bishop of Płock and the canon of Kraków, Andrzej Stanisław Załuski. His painting talent was noticed there and Tadeusz was sent to study in Rome.
He studied in Italy for 4 years: at the French Academy in Rome, and later at the Scuola del Nudo in the Capitoline Hill. He was called Taddeo Polacco by the Italians. During his stay in Italy, he painted two famous paintings for the Wawel Cathedral. He returned to Krakow in 1757 and worked there as a painter at the court of Bishop Załuski. After the bishop’s death, Konicz again went to Rome and died there in 1793. He is buried in the basement of the Church of San Andrea della Fratte.
During his lifetime, he painted many valuable paintings. They can be admired in Krakow’s churches, such as the Wawel Cathedral, the Pauline Church on the Rock, or the Franciscan Church. His paintings can also be found in other Polish cities, as well as in Italy, Germany and France.
