Lem Stanisław was an outstanding, award-winning writer born in 1921 in Lviv. There he began medical studies in 1940, which he continued at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. During the war he worked as a car mechanic. He is famous as one of the most outstanding representatives of Polish science fiction. Lem also gained international recognition, and his works have been translated into over 25 languages.
He published his first novel in 1946 and was entitled “Człowiek z Marsa” (Man from Mars). His other famous works include:

- “Powrót z gwiazd” (Return from the Stars)
- “Pamiętnik znaleziony w wannie” (Diary Found in the Bathtub)
- “Wysoki zamek” (High Castle)
- “Głos Pana” (Voice of the Lord)
- “Dzienniki gwiadowe” (Star Diaries)
- “Niezwyciężony” (Invincible)
- “Dialogi”(Dialogues)
- “Wejście na orbitę” (Entering orbit)
- “Solaris”, which was also directed by Andrzej Tarkowski.
Stanisław Lem was a member of various societies such as the Science Fiction Research Association and Science Fiction Writers of America. In 1972 he became a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences Committee “Polska 2000”.
Discovered in 1979, the asteroid, number 3836, is called Asteroid Lem. in 1995, Lem was awarded a medal for merits in the development of cosmonautics by the Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov in the company of 70 cosmonauts and astronomers from 19 countries. Lem died in 2006 in Krakow.
