Wawel cathedral treasury

The present treasury building was built by Hanusz Blatfuss from Koszyce. Valuable items have been collected there for centuries. According to the inventory from 1563, there were 120 chalices, crosses, reliquaries, pacificals, chasubles and capes. Defeats, robberies, wars, confiscations caused a great impoverishment of the treasury. The Treasury repeatedly helped the country financially when it needed it. During the Swedish invasion, Jan Kazimierz was given gold and silver items from the treasury. In 1794 Kościuszko was given golden vessels “for the needs of the homeland“. During the Swedish wars, the contents of the treasury were taken to Racibórz.
Although a small part has remained from the past, it is still the richest treasury that Poland has (except in the Jasna Góra region).
