Puget Ludwik

Puget was a sculptor and art historian. He was born in Kraków in 1877 and died in Oświęcim in 1942. He studied painting at the Krakow school of fine arts and art history at the Jagiellonian University, then in Paris. Co-founder of the Literary Circle, author of a series of articles in “Czas” entitled “New gems of Krakow” criticizing the artistic economy of Cardinal Jan Puzyna in Wawel. From 1897, he was a member of the Polish Artists Society “Sztuka”, co-organizer of the “Sculpture” Association, collaborator of the Art History Research Committee in Poland at the Academy of Arts and Sciences. Moreover, he created nativity scene dolls for the cabaret “Zielony Balonik“. Later, he himself founded a cabaret called “Różowa Kukułka. In 1942, during a Nazi raid at the Artists’ House at Łobzowska St. where he worked as a waiter, he was arrested with other artists and shot at Auschwitz Birkenau. His last sculpture was created there, a sculpture of a dog.
