Badurski Andrzej

Badurski Andrzej, Polish doctor, was born in 1740 and died in 1789 in Krakow. His father Jakub was a goldsmith.  Andrzej was studying philosophy in Jagiellonian University in Krakow, then moved to Poznań and was working there as a teacher. After coming back to Krakow he started teaching poetry in Jagiellonian University.

In 1766 he was given a scholarship for studies in Italy, so he went to Bolonia to study medicine. Once he returned to Krakow he took action to upgrade the medicine studies.  For example he offered to found a hospital where students could practice their skills. He was supported by Hugo Kołłątaj and in 1780 the first this kind of hospital was built in Krakow. In addition to this Andrzej Badurski reformed the medical faculty and started the inspection of pharmacies in Krakow. He was one of the first who paid attention to the danger of marshland close to Vistula river and the deceases that it could provoke. He was insisting on creating the water supply for Krakow.

He died at the age of 49 and was buried in the basement of St Maries Basilica at Main Market Sq.
